It’s not always easy to strike up deep conversations about God with our little ones.
Where do we start, anyways? What questions can we ask to open up dialogues on things like God’s infinite nature, his “first-ness”, and the fact that He has existed for all eternity? Can kids even grasp these big concepts?
Yes, indeed! And that’s why we absolutely love Shedrach Rowry’s new book and song called God Don’t Have No Grandma!
This is a wonderful children’s book that can help facilitate deep conversations about God with your child.
The author himself, Shedrach, describes the book this way: “Its complex ideas and theology are presented in a format that children can understand and assists them in pursuing the mystery that is God at whatever age they begin to inquire about His origin.”
In God Don’t Have No Grandma, a little boy’s innocent conversation with his grandma about ancestry turns into a much deeper discussion on who God is and where God is from. The boy, Sheddy, is first curious about how old his own grandma is and things like if his grandma also has a grandma. From there, he begins to wonder if God also has a grandma and how old He is too. The grandma answers his questions to the best of her ability with a lot of humor and sweetness along the way.
Shedrach Rowry’s inclusion of culture and family in this book is part of why we love this story so much.
Set in a Christian African-American home, the figure of the grandma resonated so much with ourselves as parents. She speaks in broken English to her grandson, and she doesn’t always know how to answer his questions, but she does her best. This is another point of the book: “you don’t have to be eloquent in speech…when you are willing to use what you have been given, God will take it and endow it with life-shaping clarity.”
In other words, we as parents don’t need to have it all figured out before trying to engage our children in these sorts of deep conversations.
We just need to try, and pray that God will speak through us. Perhaps, just by opening up these dialogues, we will be able to connect with our kids in a way that no one else will, and we will begin to pave the path to Christ, even in these early years.
Rowry’s accompanying song helps cement the ideas in the book that God is first, that He is bigger than us, and even that this concept is a mystery. It’s profound yet understandable for young kids. And Shedrach Rowry’s musical skills are incredible.
We highly recommend this book and song to anyone with young children looking to have more conversations about God! Both are now available for purchase on Amazon here: God Don’t Have No Grandma.
